The Problem Of The Shift Of Matarams Center – A remarkable fact in the ancient history of Indonesia is the shift of the center of goverment of the Kingdom of Mataram from Central to East Java in the first quarter of the 10th century A.D. This fact was preceded by a gradual shift of the attention of the Central Javanese rulers to East Java. Rakai Watukura Dyah Balitun was the first of Mataram Kings who left us inscriptions in East Java, viz. The inscription of Kinawu datd 829 Saka, also on the back of a Ganesa images from Ketanen dated 826 Saka, 1) and inscription of Kinewu dated 829 Saka, also on the back of a Ganesa image 2) Kang Daksa also issued an inscription in East Java, the inscription of Sugih Manek dated 837 Saka (O.J.O,XXX), whereas king Rake Layan Dyah Tulodon addes his edict to the earlier inscriptions of Harinjin A dated 726 Saka (Stein Callenfels, 1934) Of the three known inscriptions dating from the reign of Rakai Sumba (or Pankaja) Dyah Wawa, two were found in East Java, viz. the stone inscription of Kinawa dated 849 Saka (O.J.O., XXXII) abd the stone inscription of Sanguran dated 850 Saka (O.J.O.,XXXI).

Dr. N.J.Krom was of the opinion that it was king Pu Sindok who definitively shifted the center of goverment to East Java (Krom, 1931, p . 206). He based his opinion on Poerbatjaraka’s remark that in Sindok’s inscriptions we read in the imprecation formula ” kita prasiddha manraksa kadatwan rahyan ta i mdan i bhumi mataram i watugaluh whereas in Daksa’s and Waawa’s inscriptions this part reads ” kita prasiddha manraksa kadatwan sri maharaja i mdan i bhumi mataram. From these quatations it can be concluded that Pu Sindok did not reside at the palace of medan any more, because it is referred to in his inscriptions as the palace of his deified predecessors . Pu Sindok’s palace must thus be situasted elsewhere, vis in East Java
